What is Obesity?

Obesity is a buildup of excessive fat, in contrast to overweight (overweight). Obesity and overweight in the last decade became a global problem. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2005, about 1.6 billion adults over the age of 15+ were overweight and at least 400 million adults were obese.An easy method to know BMI measurements (body mass index) can be seen in the following table:
So to know the BMI (body mass index) can be done by: divide the body weight in kilograms with the height of the squared body in meters. Example of someone weighing 83 kg and height 1.6 m, then BMI = 83 / 1.6 * 1.6 = 32.4.From BMI results obtained can be compared with the table and it can be seen that patients suffering from obesity level 1.
The rate of individual obesity should be noted as it increases the risk of many diseases and health conditions including:
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes (The body is less sensitive to insulin)
  • Cancer (endometrium, breast, and large intestine)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Dyslipidemia (eg, high total cholesterol or high triglyceride levels)
  • Sleep apnea and breathing problems
  • Osteoarthritis (degeneration of underlying cartilage and bone in joints)
The causes of obesity include:
  • Lack of exercise
  • Excessive food consumption (more than necessary for the body)
  • Frequent consumption of alcohol
  • Unhealthy foods such as: fast food
  • Hypothyroidism (reduced thyroid gland secretion)
  • Menopause
  • Stress, lack of sleep (can trigger appetite)
Prevention and Treatment of ObesityThe most effective prevention of obesity is to consume food according to daily caloric needs. Other than that: 
  • Regular exercise
  • Healthy food
  • Avoid snacks
  • Meditation and yoga to relieve stress
Also helps in avoiding obesity. A very extreme diet is less recommended because it can lead to deficiency of vitamins and minerals.Contact your nutritionist or family physician if you feel that the above steps have been tried with unsatisfactory results and / or suffer from weight-related illnesses.
